Developing a new vision for Climate Action Buddies

We will run two 4-hours digital workshops, each from 14.00 – 18.00 CET, to develop a new vision for Climate Action Buddies. Both workshops are prepared and facilitated by the Ulex project

>>> Workshop 21st February

>>> Workshop 28th February

One year ago we started Climate Action Buddies (CAB), a project in which young environmental activists get randomly matched to other participants who live and act on different continents. We as the organising team provided a guiding framework with regular workshops, the moderation of a facebook group for participants and guiding questions for each month’s conversation.

Our goals were to help young activists build personal relationships with youth who live and act in very different contexts, in order to foster knowledge exchange across countries and movements and encourage participants to find concrete ways to support each other in the spirit of global solidarity. We wanted to build a simple decentralised network in which people feel welcome who normally don’t participate in international networks

Many great results and friendships emerged from this project but it was not as successful as we wished it to be. For this reason we reached out to the Ulex foundation to help us collectively develop a new strategy to achieve our goals. Ulex is a professional association that is specialised in planning and facilitating group processes during which movements and organisations collectively develop ideas and strategies.

The one thing I learned from my buddy? The inspiration to bring people together. Thank you for the time we have spent together!

In this two-part workshop we will come together with people who have gained valuable experience in building and facilitating global environmental (or) justice networks like YOUNGO, The Global Tapestry of Alternatives, Fridays for Future, Extinction Rebellion, and many more. In the first part we want to collect ideas about opportunities and challenges in making networks inclusive and effective in fostering knowledge exchange and mutual support amongst its members. This session will also give people from different movements the valuable opportunity to exchange and think about joint strategies. In the second part we will convene with a smaller group to develop an updated strategy for Climate Action Buddies.

In the first part, we will take stock of the status quo of the youth movement, exploring the following themes:

  • What is already being done and what could CAB do?
  • What is missing and needed?
  • Why is it missing?
  • Has it been tried and has it failed?
  • How does this all fit within broader social, economic, and political developments?

One week later, in the second session, we will build on this first session to look forward and think about the future of CAB.
