From October to December, the Climate Action Buddies community is connecting over the topic of a Global Green New Deal. Each month we will engage with one sphere of the better future we need to build.
As environmental destruction rises and injustices spread many are calling for a comprehensive plan to address these connected issues simultaneously.
How such a plan should look like was the topic of our kick-off event on the 27th October.
OCTOBER
EDUCATION
The only potential for long-lasting change lays within education. But are we taught how to adapt to the climate crisis? Do we learn how to connect to the more-than-human world? Do we believe that the institutions that teach will suffice to create the cultural and awareness shift we need? What needs to change in our communities and countries to build a comprehensive, and justice-focused environmental education?
We explored a part of this questions together with Professor Jonathan Langdon in a workshop on trans-local movement learning. You can (re-) read and watch the session here.
NOVEMEBER
DECISION MAKING
There is a gap between how political decisions are taken and what is demanded by the population – in the realm of the environment and in many other fields. Top-down governance fails to listen and engage in an inclusive way, pushing hundrets of thousands on the streets to demand for real participation. Think about Chile, Brazil, Belarus and many other places. How can we turn decision-making into a truly deliberative, participatory and inclusive process?
DECEMBER
POLITICS
Conflicts of interest and the overpowering influence of big oil and gas are blocking politics to take the steps that are so desperately needed. How can we stop fossil money from buying political influence and misleading the public about the state of our environment? How can we stop public money to flow into fossil industries that don’t have a future? How can we combine forces globally to work against these multinationally operating forces?
